Public library

Located right in the centre of the pedestrian area, this Renaissance-style building is one of the city's most impressive public buildings. It incorporates older elements, such as a Romanesque cellar and a Gothic hall at the ground floor, which were preserved during the last major restoration of the building between 1755 and 1770. The grand sandstone entrance, adorned by a lion's head, and the large hall are witnesses of the times when trade in the city boomed. Other astonishing features include the wooden arcades at the romantic back yard and remains of the original city wall at the rear building. Restored in 1999, the building today not only houses one of the must beautiful libraries in Germany but also one of the best-stocked ones.
You can chose from over 60,000 books, magazines, films, games and modern media. Internet access is also available.

Spread over three floors, the library offers a wide range of media in the main areas of "children", "young adults", "magazines", "non-fiction" and "fiction". There are separate rooms for each area with reading corners, and the skilled, helpful staff assist you with any questions you might have.

Finding your way around

Ground floor

The circulation desk can be found at the foyer. The foyer is the entrance area of the building, where you can find the wardrobe and lockers and toilet facilities (including disabled toilets). From here you can also reach the reading café at the inner court yard, the Gothic hall and the lift.

First floor

On the first floor you can find a wide selection of non-fiction books, practical guides and self-help books as well as legal texts. There is also a range of books on local history and regional studies about Pirna and Saxony. The friendly staff at the information desk are always happy to help you with any questions. Internet access and self-service copying are also available.

Mezzanine floor

The old annexe building offers material for young adults, such as books from a range of different topics, homework and study helps, career and study guides, as well as comic books, CDs, magazines and audio books.

Second floor

At the "fiction" area, you can find best sellers and popular titles, long sellers and classics, sorted by topics. The choice of fiction, poetry, audio books and magazines is determined by customer demand. Daily newspapers available are the "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten". You can also find a selection of foreign language books.

Top floor

The cosy attic floor is a great place for children aged 0 to 12. Little bookworms will find lots of reading material as well as films, games, CDs and magazines. Children can sit (or even lie) down at the comfy sitting areas and browse through their "finds". The parents' library offers a wealth of information and resources for young and expecting parents. There are baby changing and nursing facilities as well as a playpen for the very little ones.
